MARCH MAGIC

Travel isn't about leaving your hometown to find a scenic destination always....

Sometimes, your very own city gives you oodles of memories to cherish. Town Park in FARIDABAD, HARYANA, is one such place where I get to revisit my childhood often. And, this year's FLOWER SHOW was a treat to the senses AGAIN...!

YEAR 1996 - WONDERFUL FAMILY TIME!

               Mussoorie, Nainital & Haridwar

No mobile phone, no access to internet, no walk-man. We four, our luggage and car. That's it. I still remember the thrill. I am the first child of my parents, therefore the level of pampering has been a little higher. I never missed a friend in their company. In fact, you will be surprised to know that I still don't miss "the best friend". We were on wheels around 6 or 6.30 am in the month of June.

Breathtaking mountains of Mussoorie

After a mind blowing road trip, here we were in Mussoorie. Things change tremendously with time. Uttarakhand hadn't come in shape back then and Mussoorie was a part of Uttar Pradesh. I entered Garwhal Terrace, a decent looking UP Tourism hotel, with a grin and looked at my mom, she had a light smile too. I guess she was trying hard to hide the excitement of first trip to such a beautiful place, after a long period of pain. Paa didn't say anything, but I did notice peace on his face. He was more than happy. Yes, he was. Hehe! And guess, amidst all this what I bumped into. It was this fine sofa close to the window, which I immediately acquired and my brother don't know why, didn't fight me to book a place for himself. This idea of no fight was astonishing! :-)

Nevertheless, sunset was wonderful. Rays through the window were tenderly touching my face and I was welcoming all. Clouds were crossing the valley when the Sun was about to set. Soon after sunset, we all had snacks and went out for a walk to be one with this new destination. This holiday destination was indeed a pleasant gift for me and my family. My little brother was hopping. I was quiet as a child, as compared to my brother. He was stubborn as a kid whereas, I was patient. Random thoughts used to hover my mind. I vividly remember. Thoughts like how would it feel to avoid school, Had I been born in some other family, how things would have been etc. etc. And, I still can't control such thoughts. They keep coming. Only difference is, questions have changed with time.

Late 90s period was to some extent commercialized, however, travel was not much in vogue for a lot of people. There were photographs. Proper photographs. Less shots. More moments of togetherness. Less publicity. More privacy.

Next day, we shopped till we dropped and soon after, went to Kempty Falls. It is an amazing waterfall which is 13 km from Mussoorie. My eyes were glued to the falls. Water was biting cold. I wanted to bathe but could not. Mom also did not take any chance. But "here the two courageous boys jump into the water". Yes, I am talking about my father and naughty little brother. They had completely forgotten us for some time and stood right beneath the falls. We were stunned to notice that! I was a little jealous that moment as I wanted to have the same moments which they both were snatching from the cycle of time.

Har ki Pauri - Haridwar

In the evening, we left for Haridwar. We all were a little tired so were sleeping. Our driver drove smooth. I was having my Mom's shoulder for a nap. It was super relaxing. Well, my brother was munching and don't know why he was not sleeping. He wanted to notice everything, may be. He knew better. We didn't talk much and kept waiting for our next destination. It was Classic Residency, an elegant looking property. We had to stay here for a night and then leave the next day after paying an exciting visit to Har ki Pauri.

Our room was a bit small but it was well-furnished and I personally liked the decor. We had our dinner and I didn't like it much. Because, I wanted to eat something cooked by my mom. Simple. I didn't tell her this. We ate and slept for good six or seven hours. Har ki Pauri, when I had heard this name for the first time, I had found it strange, very strange. Nevertheless, when we reached Har ki Pauri, I accepted the place in its entirety. Though this place was not peaceful at all, but temples, saints and so many people from different places worshipping Ganga water was a beautiful sight. Their devotion for the place and holy river Ganga was a thing of contemplation for me. I won't dwell upon this "contemplation" part much as I am unable to recall each thought that must have crossed the lane of my mind, back then.

Naini Lake after drizzle

Wow, we were again in the mountains. I don't know why, but I have this very strong connection with mountains. All hill stations near Delhi like Dalhousie, Manali, Shimla, Chamba and many more give me immense pleasure and peace. Nainital is about 230 km away from Haridwar. Our third hotel of this memorable journey was not so good. We all were a little disappointed. My dad got furious but my mom took care of everything with patience like she always does. Hahhaha! My little champ was busy with his own little things. He did not pay heed to mom and dad's conversation and was running from one corner to another. I, as usual tried to bully him, but failed miserably this time.

Naini Lake is gorgeous. Our hotel was bang on the Mall Road so we reached the lake like in minutes. It was drizzling. Only those can paint the scene in their minds who have seen a lake when it drizzles. Those fine rain drops calmly kissing the lake body is one of the most beautiful sights one can ever have. This experience came to me and my family. WHAT A BLESSING!

"Beta idhar aao.. Boat mein baithna hai"? It was a real treat to my ears. A young boy kept on rowing the boat for us for good ten to fifteen minutes. I enjoyed the view of lofty mountains with clouds crossing all of them. Nature was at its best that day.

This entire trip is etched....!

MASHOBRA - A LITTLE PARADISE WHICH HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

KNOW, TRAVEL & RECALL

If you yearn for a pocket friendly blissful journey for a quick weekend getaway, then Mashobra is one of the best places to visit near Delhi. Weekend Getaway has become an important part of working class all over India. Since, our country doesn't follow "6 working hours that's it" concept like Sweden, people don't get time to freshen up or rejuvenate.

There was no plan for New Year but one of my childhood friends had his plan well in place. He said, Mashobra is near Shimla and is a less frequented place unlike many hill stations in India. Hill stations like Shimla, Manali are highly occupied now. People who wish to be away from traffic and hustle bustle of the city, then places like Mashobra work. We had started from ISBT New Delhi around 9.40. Volvo was quite fast and dropped us in Shimla somewhere around 5 in the morning. We were surprised as we were not expecting to reach the place so swiftly. Anyway, we had to pick another bus for Mashobra from Shimla's main Bus Stand so had to wait. Meanwhile, our mouth made way for some WAI WAI. Hot and spicy. I was loving the taste and it smelled just fantastic!

My one week stay here was simply awe-inspiring. An idyllic homestay run by a family offered home-like feel. Wilderness walk was one of the most wonderful experiences.

Location - Close to Shimla, in Himachal Pradesh

Temperature - dips to -2 degree celsius in the night frequently in winter

BOTANIX NATURE RESORT - FOR THOSE WHO ADORE COUNTRYSIDE

A TUCKED AWAY SERENE SPOT

The place isn't popular yet so we were sceptical while selecting Botanix Nature Resort for our day out. We drove for around an hour and could not spot the resort in one go. Finally, after an hour's effort when we entered, we were quite surprised to see the greenery around. Landscaped garden greeted us and we were quite excited to explore the entire property. Its ethnicity and architecture, both are in sync with nature and it feels.... a lot of its corners are untouched. It is a beautiful adventure resort, where food is scrumptious and surroundings are awe-inspiring. I actually experienced peace. I won't think twice to call it one of the best places to visit near Delhi. Suitable time is certainly not summers as it is insanely hot. But, winters can surely enhance your stay.

Nature lovers can gift themselves some exotic plants. How?
- Well, this resort houses a nursery and it has some gorgeous plants.

Best Months to plan your stay here - November, December, January and February.

Location - It is nestled in the foothills of Aravali, on the edge of Damdama Lake and just 25 minutes drive from Gurgaon, Haryana.

BHANGARH & ITS LEGEND - RAJASTHAN

Picturesque view from the Top

The Imposing Entrance

Surreal Pathway

                                               Magnificent View from the Top

STORY THAT IS STILL ALIVE

Now, it was time to drive and reach a popular place called Bhangarh which is at the edge of the Sariska Tiger Reserve. According to legend, the city of Bhangarh was cursed by the Guru Balu . He had sanctioned the construction of the town on one condition, "The moment the shadows of your palaces touch me, the city shall be no more!" When a descendant prince raised the palace to a height that cast a shadow on Balu Nath's forbidden retreat, he cursed the town. Balu Nath is said to be buried there to this day in a small samādhi.

UNVEILING THE MYTH

Another myth is the legend of the Princess of Bhangarh, Ratnavati. She is believed to be the jewel of Rajasthan. On her eighteenth birthday she began to get offers of marriage from other regions (i.e. nobility). In the area lived a tantrik, a magician well versed in the occult, called Singhia, who was in love with the princess but knew that the match was impossible. One day Singhia saw the princess's maid in the market, he used his black magic on the oil she was purchasing so that upon touching it the princess would surrender herself to him. The princess, however, seeing the tantric enchanting the oil, foiled his plan by pouring it on the ground. As the oil struck the ground it turned into a boulder, that crushed Singhia. Dying, the tantrik cursed the palace with the death of all who dwelt in it. The next year there was a battle between Bhangarh and Ajabgarh in which Princess Ratnavati perished. Legends say that there are ghosts in Bhangarh and that is why entry is prohibited for tourists in the fort after sunset and before sunrise. The locals believe that the princess Ratnavati has taken birth somewhere else and that the fort and the empire of Bhangarh is waiting for her return to put an end to the curse.

IMAGINE

Anyway, the above legend is just a part of the offerings. I cornered the scary stories and tried to construct the small city in my imagination from its ruins. Take a look at the photographs below and absorb its grandiose......!

ALWAR - RAJASTHAN

WHAT DRIVES ME

Being a writer, it is always a pleasure to pen down thoughts and when it comes to describing what one loves, the activity becomes even more exhilarating. Since time immemorial, people have travelled and have been travelling to know what the world has in store and to know themselves better. Be it countryside, a serene spot away from the noisy city life, a bench in a beautiful garden or a very simple Dhaba on a highway, anything and everything has the ability to take us to the world of immense joy and peace.

SARISKA - A MINI GEM

Sariska National Park is one of the holiday destinations near Delhi where I love going with my family often. The place is less inhabited and is close to Delhi. The forest cover is adequate for a traveller who admires nature and wildlife. Sad part was that we couldn't spot a tiger, but that's ok.

I spotted this beautiful deer at Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar, Rajasthan. In the month of May when the temperature soars in Rajasthan and nearby states, I got to absorb the pleasant weather with my family. It was windy, cloudy and the green hue around was at my gaze. I couldn't have asked for more as Nature was too generous that day- (12th May, 2014). Not just this, but I saw more than 25 dancing peacocks in the park which was like a dream coming true. Below are some clicks...

IF YOU'RE TRAVELLING

If you wish to have a budget stay then Tiger Den is one such offering right next to the gate of Tiger Reserve. Its location is one of the best features for it provides peace and serene surroundings. Long drive is preferable for Delhites as some amazing views would certainly make you go gaga over Rajasthan's terrain.
